International Women's Day
March 8th 2018

International Women’s Day is a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements – from the political to the social – while calling for gender equality. It has been observed since the early 1900s and is now recognised each year on this day, March 8. It brings together governments, women's organisations, corporations and charities. The day is being marked around the world with arts performances, talks, rallies, events, conferences and marches.
To mark International Women's Day we have been learning about two very inspiring women who shaped history. The first lady is Helen Keller. Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In 1882, she was stricken by an illness that left her blind and deaf. Beginning in 1887, Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan, helped her make tremendous progress with her ability to communicate, and Keller went on to college, graduating in 1904. In 1920, Keller helped found the ACLU. During her lifetime, she received many honours in recognition of her accomplishments.

This webslte above tells you more about Helen Keller and how incredibly inspirational she was. She is a true role model for women around the world who are faced with similar difficulties. She taught everyone that nothing is impossible and you can achieve everything you want out of life no matter what challenges come your way. This is a picture of Helen Keller.
The second lady we studied was Anne Frank. Anne Frank was born in 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. Anne’s family were Jewish, which meant life was very hard for them in Germany after Adolf Hitler became the leader there. Hitler made a lot of laws that went against people who were Jewish, and eventually he ordered that Jewish people be arrested..

Anne Frank’s family moved to Amsterdam in The Netherlands to be safe, but when World War II began, this wasn’t safe anymore. They built hidden rooms inside a house where Natzi soldiers wouldn’t find them, and friends brought them food.. Anne and her family hid for two years before they were found, arrested by the Natzis and taken to concentration camps.. Most people in concentration camps did not survive; around 6 million Jewish people died during World War II.

Those who survived were freed when Allied troops found them, but Anne, her older sister and her mum all died before this happened. Anne’s dad survived, and found Anne’s diary. He published it so others could read about Anne and about what she and her family went through. This is a picture of Anne Frank.

Fancy Brunch??!

Today we set to work learning how to make scrambled egg on toast. We started by cracking eggs into a cup, adding a dash of milk and stirring until it was mixed through. Then we put it in the microwave for about 4 minutes, stirring it regularly to make sure it was cooking through. We each made a slice of toast to go with it and spread the butter carefully on top. We then spooned our scrambled egg onto our toast and tucked in! Afterwards, like all good chefs, we helped our teacher to clean up the staff room...scraping our leftovers into the bin, .washing and drying the delph, sweeping the floor and wiping down the tables. We really enjoyed ourselves and we can't wait to surprise our mums and dads with breakfast in bed some morning soon. They will be so proud of what we make.

All kinds of everything!

We've been busy at work using wool and pieces of fabric to create some interesting characters. Some of us chose a female template, others a male template and finally some girls chose an animal mask template. We then designed our characters using lots of different materials and cut them to size. Check out what we made!!

Learning how to make our own bread!

Our midterm break is over but we didn't mind because first thing this morning, we went about learning how to make our very own healthy oat and yogurt bread. Using only 5 ingredients, we all worked together to help our teacher make the bread dough. We put it into the oven to bake for 55 minutes and with a little butter on top, it was so very tasty! We're becoming very accomplished bakers!

Our Projects- Celebrations around the World

Discovering so much with our Rediscovery Workshops!

Love is in the air....

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and we want to tell our Mums and Dads how much we love them.......

Budding Architects!

We have been looking at the structure of buildings and the different designs buildings have. We looked at the New York Skyline and used that as inspiration for our two art lessons on buildings. We made Chalk City Skylines and Sun Setting Cities.
Here is a slideshow of our work

We're really enjoying our gymnastic module with Ms Tighe!

Did somebody say baking??

Yes we did! Yummy, tasty sultana loaf!!!

Healthy Living Week!

Tea Testing!

As part of our Geography course, we were learning about the history of tea. Tea originates in India, China and Sri Lanka. It is grown in tea plantations. The top leaves are picked from the plants and it is brought to tea factories. where it is left to dry and wither. Then it is rolled and placed into boxes before being delivered to shops. Today we examined and smelt a range of teas from Indian infused spiced tea to the old favourites........Barrys and Lyons!

We are all unique and special!

We are all unique and special in our own way and we made a collage to show this. Not only are we different physically but we have different talents, abilities, goals, personalities, likes, dislikes, fears and much more. All of this makes us special in our own way and as Sophie wrote on her character's t-shirt.....just be you.

Flexing those muscles!

Bhaineamar an sult as caife cairde inniu agus is tús iontach a bhí ann do seachtain na Gaeilge.
Chuamar síos go dtí an halla le euro amháin agus bhí cead againn deoch agus cáca beag nó brioscaí a fháil.
Rinneamar an iarracht Gaeilge a labhairt agus frásaí beaga a úsáid mar shampla:
Ba mhaith liom.....
Tá sé an blasta
Go raibh maith agat
Cáca seacláide le do thoil
Deoch oráiste lédo thoil
Seo duit
Slán go foill
Táimíd ag tnúth go mor do na gníomhachtaí atá eagraithe an tseachtain seo agus ba mhaith linn buíochas a ghábhail do na tuismitheoirí as ucht caife cairde a eagrú. Bhaineamar an taitneamh as agus bhí na cácaí go hálainn!!!
Last Friday week we had our final workshop with  Roberta from the Rediscovery Centre. She came in and did a range of activities with us. Firstly we played the moving debate game where Roberta gave us the name of an object and we had to decide if it was a need or a want. Some of the things she mentioned were chocolate, a house, television and so on. We had to be able to explain our reasoning behind our choice and it was really interesting to see and hear the opinions of the other girls in the class.
We then looked at th life cycle of an apple...an apple that is home grown in our garden or an apple that it bought from the supermarket. Using this information we then worked in groups and Roberta gave us images of the life cycle of different vegetables and fruits and we had to put them in order. This was quite challenging and really got us thinking and discussing it in our groups.
Following on from this, Roberta did planting with us. Each girl got the opportunity to plant marigolds, peas or herbs. We are carefully taking care of these in our school classroom at the moment by watering them regularly and keeping them in sunlight. We were so pleased when we arrived into school this morning after our midterm break to see some teeny tiny glimpses of green appearing out of the soil. In a few weeks we will transfer them to a patch in the school garden.
Finally Roberta asked us to explain to her what we had been working on since her workshop in November. We told her all about our sweet wrapper flag project, our bottle cap shooting stars project and our bin display projects. Roberta was so impressed and proud of our projects and she took photographs of them so that she can show them to other school children she visits around Ireland with her Rediscovery workshops. We felt pretty good about ourselves and we want to thank Roberta for such informative and enjoyable workshops. We (and our teacher!!) learned so much about the environment and by making small changes, we can make big changes to the world we live in.
We have been having the most wonderful few days as we mark Healthy Living Week. It started on Monday with Walk a Mile with a Smile and we were certainly smiling! There is no better way to kick start the day than with a lovely morning walk and the weather was on our side too! We chatted away to one another and we were completely energised when we returned to the class.
On Tuesday we were treated to a great lesson from Eleanor who works in Temple Street Children's Hospital in the dental department. She taught us all about dental care, how and how often we should brush our teeth and what foods are good and bad for our teeth. She explained to us what hidden sugars meant and we were gobsmacked when we learned how many cubes of sugar are in milkshakes and fizzy drinks. The best drink is water. It contains absolutely no sugar and eating lots of fruit and vegetables will make sure we have sparkling teeth for years to come!
Everyday this week we have been given beautiful Mc Cambridge's brown bread and delicious fruit to enjoy with our lunch. On Monday we got fruit and veg platters, on Tuesday we got a banana, on Wednesday we got mandarins and today we got crunchy apples. We have been using our brown bread to make delicious sandwiches for our school lunches or for our breakfast or supper at home. We also studied the Mc Cambridge website and learned about all the products they make. It's been great fun!
Today we are focusing on mindfulness and meditation and we did some guided meditation at the start of our day this morning. We also focused on breathing exercises and used our favourite teddy to help us with this. As part of homework this week we have been focusing on aspects of healthy living such as designing a healthy packed lunch, writing a smoothie or fresh fruit salad recipe, doing a sports activity, writing about Eleanor's visit and engaging in meditation at home. In class too we made our toothy friends who are showing everyone aspects of healthy living such as sleep, dental care, yoga, healthy food and exercise. Check them out!
As part of healthy living week we did mindfulness and meditation. We brought in a teddy bear to help us focus on our breathing. We all lay down, put our teddy on our tummy and watched it rise and fall as we inhaled and exhaled. Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment and taking a few minutes every day to notice how we feel and to just focus on your breathing is very important. We all felt calm and relaxed in our minds and in our bodies afterwards
It's Friday morning. We are all full of energy after Wake Up and Shake Up so lets not stop there! It's the 10 at 10. We moved, stretched, skipped, jumped and worked up a sweat! We  were certainly ready for the day ahead!
Today was the best! !It was buffet day and we had been looking forward to it all week. We went to the hall to sample delicious  healthy fruit, vegetables and treats.. We tastes banana breads, corn bread, pitta breads, tuna wraps, oat porridge bread, hummus and veg dippers, couscous, smoothies, fruit kebabs, vegetable skewers, yogurt with granola and much much more. We were encouraged to try new things we had never had before and we happily gave everything a go! We were so full that we had no room left in our tummies for lunch so that was a very good sign!!
We all want to say a very big thank you to the Parents Association for organising such a wonderful week. From Walk a Mile on Monday to the buffet today....everything has been simply brilliant. Thank you all SO MUCH!
During September and December we were covering the strand of gymnastics in PE and for the first two weeks in January we worked on putting together all our skills into a routine. We used a range of stretches and movement actions to put together our sequences, whilst also trying to pay attention to our posture and holding positions for a short period of time.
Our teacher broke us up into 5 groups of 6 and for the first week, we had to plan and prepare a gymnastic sequence. This took a bit of time and preparation as we needed to make sure every girl was included and had a part to play.
